In the sections below, the themes studied in third grade are divided by subjects. However, we will be learning about them in integrated units that connect our writing, reading, social studies and science curricula.
Reading/Lectura
Making Meaning:
Part of the CCC Collaborative Literacy suite of programs, Making Meaning provides a full year of research-based instruction for grades K–6* that helps teachers deepen their understanding of best practices for teaching comprehension and vocabulary. The curriculum intentionally combines academics with social and emotional learning to create an environment in which students learn to collaborate, agree and disagree respectfully, and take responsibility for their own learning. Carefully selected nonfiction and fiction read-aloud trade books provide a rich, rewarding experience as students encounter increasingly complex texts and build their vocabulary.

Daily 5:
In our classroom we use an adaptation of the Daily 5 model to organize our literacy instruction. Every day, readers rotate through rounds of independent work while other students are meeting in guided reading groups with the teacher. There are three tasks that students can choose from: Read to Self, Read to Someone and Work on Writing. This model allows the teacher to differentiate his instruction and meet each student’s needs.
En nuestro salón utilizamos una adaptación del modelo Daily 5 para organizar el bloque de lectoescritura. Cada día los estudiantes rotan a través de distintas actividades independientes de lectura y escritura mientras que otros estudiantes se reúnen con el maestro en grupos de lectura guiada. Hay tres actividades de entre las cuales los estudiantes pueden elegir: Lectura individual, lectura con un/a compañero/a y escritura. Este modelo permite al maestro adaptar la enseñanza a las necesidades de cada niño/a.

Units of study:
Math/Matemáticas
District 65 uses the Everyday Mathematics (EM) program from the University of Chicago. This curriculum emphasizes problem-solving along with basic skills, and it has recently been aligned with the new Common Core State Standards. Students continue to build on knowledge they gained in second grade and learn to go deeper with bigger numbers and more complex thinking. They also get to play many math games that reinforce learned skills and strategies and help students work with each other cooperatively.
